While I think Saddam and his cohorts have WMDs or have exported them to avoid their discovery, I recognize this has not been conclusively established as yet. I believe that is only a matter of time. If there were any intention to fabricate evidence, this would have already been done since our troops have uncovered direct evidence of the delivery systems and equipment relative to their possible use.
Although his direct hand in supporting al-Qaeda has not been firmly established, Saddam's efforts to support international terrorism by encouraging it with money and harboring at least one terrorist is a matter of record. Beyond this, he has been a nightmare to a significant portion of his own people, has used the wealth of his nation for the personal gratification of himself and his inner circle, and is threat to his neighbors, if not the world.
But aside from the aforementioned, my main reason for feeling as I do is that I agree with the new policy that the only way to discourage futher acts of terrorism on our homeland is to demonstrate to the world that the consequences to the sponsors of cowardly terrorist acts against innocent citizens living within our borders can be dramatically painful. I wonder if those who harbored Bin Laden ever envisioned that the consequence of 9/11 would be the destruction of their hold on their country and forfeiture of their power and personal safety. I wonder if Hussein and the Ba'ath party really knew that they were letting themselves in for the same. I believe they never forsaw the terrible consequences to themselves of their unwise decisions and that a lot of potential rogue leaders are rethinking their plans to support terrorism. We will see what happens with Syria and North Korea and others. If they become more peaceful, this point will be proven. I believe we may also see a reworked attitude on the part of certain European mini-powers.
If the end result is a less threatening world (even though the possibility of isolated acts of terrorism can never be completely extinguished)than the three week demonstration of this nation's awesome power and will to use it where deemed necessary will have been well worth it regardless of whether we prove WMDs or not. Hopefully, we will never have to demonstrate it again. If, on the other hand, the result is more state supported terrorism, than I will sorrowfully admit the error of my thinking. Let's all hope I'm right --even if you think I'm wrong. I was with my children and grandchildren on this Easter day and pray that they will never have to wonder each day whether suicidal zealots will destroy them as they work.
Peace
Rich
