Some other reports i have read say that some of the soldiers denied even having knowledge of the letters being sent with their names on them. One soldier's letter was published in a small town paper while he lay in a hospital bed wounded. The letter didnt mention that he was wounded. Apparently, those who wrote on his behalf didn't bother to check that.
